Wilhelm was a human mage and Enchanter of the Circle of Magi who lived in the village of Honnleath. He was the owner of Shale.

Background

According to Shale, Wilhelm was quite vain, and willing to scare the villagers to show off his power. He was fond of going into the Deep Roads in search of treasure despite the darkspawn danger, which is where he apparently found Shale by accident while trying to escape from shrieks.[1]

Maric Theirin disliked Wilhelm because of his brash manners, but still considered him a good man and a useful asset to the rebel cause because of his magic and his golem, so his presense was tolerated.

Both Wilhelm and Shale were part of the rebellion of Moira Theirin, and later, of Prince Maric, and fought against the Orlesian forces occupying Ferelden. Wilhelm held some authority in the army, and provided healing magic for the troops, as well as twice magically testing Maric to confirm his identity.

Later on, when Prince Maric was declared dead by King Meghren, following the devastating rebel defeat in West Hill, he organized the defenses of the remaining rebel army in Gwaren until the Prince arrived.

After the rebellion, thanks to his token appointment as court advisor, Wilhelm retired to the village of Honnleath in western Ferelden and started a family, free from his duties as a Circle enchanter.

Both Wilhelm's son, Matthias, and Shale claim that Wilhelm was killed by Shale while he was tinkering with it. However, no one actually saw Shale kill him, and Shale has no memory of the event.

Entries in Wilhelm's journal reveal that he was researching a means to counter demonic possession. This would seem to explain the numerous demons bound within the basement of his tower, which Matthias describes as his father's "defenses". In his final journal entry, he states his belief that the desire demon he was interrogating was too dangerous to hold any longer, and that he could not discount the possibility that it was influencing Shale.
