Note: Killing the assassin at The Black Fens before getting the quest and looting him, might result in an unfinishable quest due to him not respawning.
Craft a proper knife, study the methods required to wield it, and Heir will reveal the secrets of the Assassin specialization. Kill guild leaders for their tokens at the East Side Hills, the Flats, and the Black Fens in Crestwood. Readings can be found among the belongings of followers who share this discipline. Or, if unavailable, among the wares of the book merchant in Val Royeaux.
This quest is not available until you complete From the Ashes and reach Skyhold. The war table operation, Specializations for the Inquisitor will appear when you leave Skyhold for the first time and return. Completing the operation unlocks specialization quests.
Three potential trainers, one for each specialization, will arrive at Skyhold to teach the rogue Inquisitor a specialization. Talk to the Assassin trainer Heir to start the quest.
You must craft The Murder Knife for this quest.
Forged cold to match intent. A symbolic dagger not intended for combat, but it does produce a weapon. The process is an acknowledgment of purpose and commitment. The result is a killer, not a blade.

Assassin Weapons are looted from bandit leaders throughout Crestwood:
Northwest of New Crestwood, at a dock on the lake.
West of New Crestwood, near the Fisherman's Shack.
South of the dam, west of the dragon encounter at a quarry.
It is also obtainable by killing assassins in Valammar or White Claw Raiders in Western Approach.
An Assassin Weapon can be obtained by from the Carta leader in Valammar
Deathroot can be found throughout the Western Approach or Hissing Wastes. It is also sold by Village of Crestwood merchant. It can also be obtained from the war table operation Hissing Wastes Resources with Leliana.
Craft the knife at any requisition table and return to Heir to complete the quest and learn the Assassin specialization.
- All three specialization quests can be active at the same time; however, only one specialization can be chosen.
- The quest journal states that you need to collect Assassin Guild Leader Tokens, however the items you loot are simply called Assassin Weapons.
- It's possible to obtain it from Emerald Graves from a Freeman Of The Dales leader.
