The soldiers in "Loghain's Push" were not doing their jobs. It isn't the job of soldiers to go onto someone else's land and compel fealty of other soldiers. Those soldiers answer to their bann, and the bann does NOT answer to Loghain. Those soldiers were in violation of the law, and they attacked the bann's men with the full intention of murdering them. My team defended the lives of the bann's soldiers. My team was not there to kill them, just to stop them from killing.
The carta dwarves most certainly did have a choice, as proven by those carta dwarves who surrendered and agreed to leave peacefully. This happens in the store as well as the abandoned house. As for those who stayed with the carta, they can't use their families as an excuse for their crimes. What about the families they stole from? What about those they murdered? Crime is crime, regardless of the motives. Besides, those carta attacked me. Self-defense.
I never sought people out for murder in the BI and IP quests. Any quests dealing with murder were either not accepted or they were resolved without murder.
In Haven we found an altar with human blood. Then we went to the shop. After buying some things we went to investigate the back room. The owner acted suspicious and told me not to go back there. When I told him I would have to insist he tried to murder me! What was I to do, let him murder me? We then found a body of one of the knights of Redcliffe, which means the owner participated in the murder of that knight. Then we were ambushed outside the shop. When I went to inform the guard, he and others attacked us as well. So we defended ourselves. Same with the "church".
I rejected Kolgrim's deal, and he tried to murder us for refusing. These killings were not needless. The need was to preserve the lives of my party members. You could say that those deaths were needless, but that is only because those people needlessly threw their lives away trying to commit murder.
