“Hello! Sweet Andraste, it's good to see you again. I swear you're taller every time.”

The Kindly Knight is an elderly knight who has lived in Serault for many years and knows its history, laws and customs better than anyone. He serves in the court of the Marquis of Serault. He is well-regarded as a pious man and a loyal vassal, though his peers mutter that he's too gentle with the peasantry. He hasn't been the same since the death of his wife. He is the uncle of the Wayward Bard.

1.

Consult his expertise
The Kindly Knight knows Serault's past better than anyone: ancient murders, lingering oaths, the disasters at the Green Bridge and the Bridge of Masks, even the enigmatic miracles of Masked Andraste.
Difficulty: Scholarship*2

Success: A history lesson
You meet him in your solar, where a scurrying page brings wine and a bowl of nuts fresh from the Applewoods. The Knight sets upon them with the nutcracker. Satisfying cracks and sprays of shell accompany his lecture.<\p>
His knowledge is fathomless, but old. Still, it's a rare mistake that hasn't been made before. Serault's fields are furrowed with old feuds, lost promises, and political comprise. Those who do not learn from the lessons of the past...

Failure: A morass of facts and figures
The Knight accompanies you on a walk through the châteaux. Through chromatic columns of light that lean from its windows. Past hurrying servants who bow as you pass. You slow your usual brisk pace to accommodate his limp.
He expounds at length, but not a thing he says pertains to the current century. There are some general lessons to be learned, you suppose, but little that's directly relevant.

2.

Ask the Kindly Knight about the Elusive Iconoclast
(Requires Flames of Freedom)
She has been sighted on his lands.

Result: A gentle reproach
"Hm? Oh, yes. Charming young lady. Golden hair - but cropped, of course. Eyes brown as fresh-tilled earth. Like my poor Acerie. She's wilful, yes, but she's young. You remember what that's like. Better than I do, at least.
"And she does have a point, doesn't she, eh? Comes on a bit strong, but the common folk... well, things change, don't they.'
"Where is she? I couldn't say. She comes, she goes. If she doesn't want to be found, she can bow her head, put mud on her face, and vanish among the serfs. If we paid more heed to them, perhaps we'd be able to tell them apart, hm?"

3.

Piece together a chapter of the Badenflus manuscript
The Knight has a partial copy in his library. It is the most regarded of martial manuscripts, and the least comprehensible.

Result: Practise makes perfect
After reconstructing another chapter, the two of you go down to the courtyard to practice. The Knight's joints creak. His back is bent. But the pursuit of knowledge restores his vigor, and his muscles remember his days of sword-work even if his head does not. Together you practise 'the falcon's gyre' and 'the falling oak' until the form comes naturally.
-(Derring-Do) in Clues, +1 Derring-Do (+3 if Derring-Do > 50

Result (alternate): 'The play of the sword'
Badenflus was a poet as well as a swordswoman. Deciphering the manuscript is a painstaking process of extrapolation from her charming, but florid, similes.
'Show them the sun,' means pushing your opponent's guard back and up. And 'turn like the serpent' means counter-clockwise, but does it refer to your wrist or your waist? When 'closing the gate' how close should you set your feet? Progress is slow, but fruitful. Badenflus killed better than she rhymed.

4.

Ask for his help interpreting Serault's ancient laws
Serault's legal system is a thicket of local custom, Marquisal precedent, and imperial decree. The Knight's scholarship will untangle it, His lenience will blunt its thorns.
Spend Clues to increase Freedom. The higher your Freedom, the more it will cost.

Result: Clarity
The evening deepens. The library is studded with candles. With the Kindly Knight's aid, you winnow a labyrinthine tangle of inheritance law into a simple precedent. One that avaricious client-lords can't subvert to line their pockets.
-(Freedom) in Clues, +10 Freedom

Result (alternate): Clemency
A robin perches nosily outside the library window as you scour tomes of solemn case-law. Some of Serault's laws are old and cruel: a whipping for wearing colors above your station? A day in the stocks for eating out on Disciple Hessarian's birthday? The Knight assembles contradictory precedents, and you strike the decrepit laws from the page.
-(Freedom) in Clues, +10 Freedom

5.

Buy old lore to help the Kindly Knight's studies
In his dotage he has turned his home into a library. His appetite for books is insatiable.
(Uses 2 actions)

Success: Innocent Pastimes
You spend some time in his study, amidst lofty piles of dusty books and mouldering scrolls. His obsession is death, and what comes after. He devours ghost stories like the Wayward Bard does whisky. "Just an old man's folly," he avers, when you enquire as to his interest.
You bring him a work containing passages he has not seen before. For a moment the years fall from him. He is as gleeful as a student again, wallowing amidst his books and maps.
-3 Bags of Royals, +1 Favor

Failure: Obsessions
He receives your gifts graciously, promising they will be the pride of his collection. But the next time you visit, you see he had copies of them already.
He grows increasingly distracted. When you ask how his studies progress he looks glum, and mutters about having to consult "a source closer to the matter".
-3 Bags of Royals, +4 Clues

6.

Ask him to become your counselor
Few in Serault are as well-read as he.

Result: A new advisor
"Why, I'd be honored, of course! I will endeavor to provide wise counsel. Times may change, but some wisdom is timeless, eh?" His grey head wags with delight.
-2 Favor, Knight becomes Counselor with +20 Scholarship

7.

Spend time with him in his library
(Requires Knight as Counselor)
And see what you can discover.

Result: Another world
Sunlight slants through his paned window. The primrose outside brushes its petals imploringly against the glass.
You lose yourself amidst crackling, yellow scrolls and books with pages so thin you can see your fingers through them. For a time, you leave Serault to take care of her own affairs.
The one he reads most - the ones with the folded corners and replaced spines - are works about the afterlife. You study the passages he has marked. Is he looking for a way to speak with the dead?
-1 Favor, +3 Scholarship, +11-14 Freedom, +7-9 Clues

8.

Ask him about the Freehold
(Requires The Freehold)
What does he think he's doing?

Result: He blinks
"It is an...experiment, your Grace. The smallfolk deserve a chance, do they not? To prove themselves?" His moustache quivers. "The Iconoclast may be...over-enthusiastic, but she has a point. How can people thrive when we only think the worst of them?"
