“There will always be someone watching you, day or night. And if a blade is needed, one won't be far.”

The Dashing Outlaw is a bandit residing in the woods in Serault. She has a curiously productive working relationship with the Marquis of Serault.

Card Description[]

Her laugh rings through the woodlands. She's a hero to the peasantry, despite taking rather more from the rich than she gives to the poor.

The Outlaw is elusive, but a message delivered into the right hands will find its way to her...

Involvement[]

This section contains spoilers for:
Dragon Age: The Last Court.

The Dashing Outlaw refuses the Errant Siblings when they ask to join her gang since they robbed the poor of Serault rather than targeting the wealthy as the Outlaw does. In retaliation she hands the siblings over to The Horned Knight.

The Dashing Outlaw is framed for an attack on three Val Royeaux merchants traveling for Divine Justinia V's feast by the Marquis of Alyons.

At the feast the Outlaw asks the Divine to be shriven and the Divine grants her a full pardon.

She can be recruited to become either as an accomplice or bodyguard:

“You meet, hooded, at a crossroads while the woods whisper under a dark wind and the moon pours silver across the leaves. There, you agree terms. Her smile hides a dogged bargainer, hardly the careless idealist of the ballads. But your patience is as long, and when dawn comes you've a gang of celebrated bandits at your service.”

Available actions[]

1.

Send a messenger to ask for information
The more lawless Serault is, the more she knows...
Difficulty: Peril*6/5

Success: The dark side of Serault
She sends back a detailed account of recent skullduggery. You know who's been lurking in the Applewoods, which villages are lying to you about how much tax they owe, and which nobles are dallying with peasants in quiet glades.
+8 Clues

Failure: Frustration
"I can't work like this!" she complains. "There are patrols woods. Fires in the watchposts! My men can hardly breathe."
She tells you what little she's learned.
+2 Clues

2.

Unravel her artifice
How does she vanish into thin air? How can she be in two places at once? How can she rob, waylay and murder, and still be beloved?

Result: How does she do it?
The common folk think she's a mage. But a mage doesn't maintain alibis and lookalikes, fresh horses stabled in secret locations, and informants in every roadside inn the length of Marquisate. As you unravel her secrets, you pick up a few things yourself...
-(Cunning) in Clues, +3 Cunning

Result (alternate): Writing history
The Outlaw wasn't born well enough to own a Bard, but she makes good use of minstrels and troubadours. The lesser part of what she does is banditry. The better part is showmanship: it's better to write the stories about you than to leave someone else to do it.
-(Cunning) in Clues, +3 Cunning

3.

Turn a blind eye to her crimes
Serault has many dangers. At least you can talk to this one.

Result: Dirty business
When one of her band is caught they are sentenced to no more than a few days in the stocks. A coffer of taxes never reaches your castle; you write them off. Merchants and nobles complain of bandits wearing her colours waylaying them in the woods. You promise to investigate, then drop the matter.
One day, someone shoots an arrow through the privy window. The words 'I OWE YOU,' are cut into the shaft.
You'd have accepted a letter.
+1 Favor, +33 Peril, -33 Prosperity, -33 Dignity

4.

Employ her to ensure your safety
No-one knows the size of her band, and she has agents and sympathisers all across Serault.

Result: A bargain
"We've an understanding, you and I. I'd rather see you on the high seat of Serault than that sibling of yours. I'll speak to my Eyes and my Teeth," she says."There will always be someone watching you, day or night. And if a blade is needed, one won't be far."
She grins. "Sleep well, Scholar/Huntress."
-2 Favor, Outlaw becomes Bodyguard with +20 Cunning, The Outlaw slips into the shadows. "Don't worry," she says. "I'll be watching.", You have appointed a bodyguard

5.

Ask her to train you
(Requires Outlaw as Bodyguard)
She knows the woods well, and has an enviable talent for trickery.

Result: Midnight lessons
She teaches you to lie boldly, and to deceive with the truth. She shows you hidden trails through the trees, and how to hear the wood's whispered messages. She peppers her lessons with a lively spinkle of hearsay.
-1 Favor, +1 Cunning, +1 Woods-wise, +(3 to 6) Clues

6.

Recruit her as your accomplice
It will be useful to have agents on both sides of the law.

Result: Mutual interests
You meet, hooded, at a crossroads while the woods whisper under a dark wind and the moon pours silver across the leaves. There, you agree terms.
Her smile hides a dogged bargainer, hardly the careless idealist of the ballads. But your patience is as long, and when dawn comes you've a gang of celebrated bandits at your service.
-2 Favor, Outlaw becomes Accomplice with +20 Cunning, Will the Outlaw keep your bargain?, You have chosen an accomplice

7.

Ask the Dashing Outlaw to lay low for a while
(Requires Outlaw as Accomplice)
You've become - if not friends - something that could be mistaken for them at a distance.

Result: Breathing space
She scowls. "If it was anyone else asking, I'd tell them to go diddle a bereskarn. But I know you must have your reasons. All right. It'll be lean times in the Deepwoods. My people won't be happy, but I can hold them at bay for a while. Do what you must."
-1 Favor, -11-15 Peril, +1-2 Authority, +7-9 Prosperity, +1 Cunning, +8-14 Clues

8.

Ask the Dashing Outlaw what she knows of the robbery
(Requires Case: The Dashing Outlaw Strikes Again)
She might even tell you the truth.

Notes[]

  • Spending the Outlaw's Favor will not make back as much Prosperity and Peril as it cost, though it will gain some amount of Authority and clues, and a point in Cunning. It may be more efficient to just spend Clues to have her train you in Cunning.
  • Outside of special quests, the Dashing Outlaw is the only character you can spend a Favor for when not recruited, on the Outlaws Plague the Roads card.
  • The Dashing Outlaw is the only subject who cannot be called using the Send For quest.
