Thaigs are caverns within the Deep Roads where dwarves had built settlements from the stone in tribute to their Paragons.

One of the first thaigs was the Primeval Thaig, created many years before the first Blight, but is so old (over ten thousand years) that it seems to have been forgotten in dwarven history. A thaig named "first thaig" is mentioned in the dwarven history, but, according to the codex, the Primeval Thaig is much older.

The dwarven kingdoms originally consisted of 12 large thaigs and numerous smaller thaigs, but most have been lost during the Blights. There are only two large thaigs still inhabited - Kal-Sharok and Orzammar.
