Regarding the need to loot the bodies in order to complete the quest, I have found (PC version, no patches) that you don't need to - in fact, cannot - look Brian's corpse. This may be due to my killing him too quickly, as suggested in the article, but I reloaded several times and even killed him with a bare-handed Alistair by himself (the slowest method I could think of), but he's so easy to kill he dies 'too fast' even then!

He's also the only one without any guards. So that might be relevent. I was still able to hand the quest in with no problems.
