Removed suggested link between blood magic and possession per this comment from David Gaider: "Some mages learn the secrets of blood magic from demons, and perhaps in some cases that might lead to a possession, but in most cases blood magic and possession are not directly related. Mages are certainly susceptible to possession, yes, but they need not use blood magic to be so. " Maria Caliban 03:14, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Questioning image Edit

Do we know this is Morrigan casting that specific spell? In the trailer, it appears that both the woman and Morrigan are under the same spell, as they both are levitated and both begin to shake. --Selty 13:43, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

In ** Your mother must be proud!!!!@@@the video they both lift into the air and shake, but the one who is not morrigan dies.75.80.128.65 19:18, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
Last comment was me. Cheeseslayersmu 19:18, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

But that doesn't mean she is casting a spell...--Selty 01:42, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Nevermind. Just found the answer in a thread I was randomly browsing. I will change it to 'A mage' instead of Morrigan.Cheeseslayersmu 20:55, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

I'd change this myself if I could, but even after registering, I can't change this specific page. Anyway, the caption "A victim of the blood wound spell" is wrong. That image is from a cutscene, not normal gameplay. The spell being cast is never named, but the effect is absolutely nothing like the description of "blood wound".

SpoilersEdit

It believe it was decided to keep spoilers off of the wiki until the game was released - perhaps the demon link should be removed for now. - Craig Graff

I removed who can teach the blood mage specialization. Was that what you were referring to? Loleil 02:49, October 31, 2009 (UTC)

Please add who teaches or how to obtain training for blood magic, the game is released. this is crap

Urn of Sacred Ashes Edit

Shouldn't the fact that you can learn it in the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest be added as well? Without revealing any spoilers, of course. --Haasth 01:39, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

Could anyone add that? This page does not seem to allow editing. --Haasth 01:39, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

The page already notes how to learn this specialization. Sheltim 02:33, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

Yes it shows that it is learn-able from the Desire Demon in Redcliffe. Which is correct, but there are two ways of obtaining it. If you do the Urn of Sacred Ashes quest and are not a warrior (You'd get Reaver if you are) you are offered Blood Magic. --Haasth 11:37, November 12, 2009 (UTC)

There is a good chance I am wrong here. And the fact that he (Korgrin) said Blood Magic to me merely meant Reaver.. I'm going to test it. --Haasth 13:20, November 13, 2009 (UTC)

I just did the Urn quest as a mage and Kolgrim taught me Reaver. He does not teach Blood Mage, but he does teach "blood magic" in the form of Reaver. Sheltim 14:51, November 13, 2009 (UTC)

--Whosi 04:19, November 21, 2009 (UTC)== Typo ==

For what it's worth, saucy is spelled incorrectly(sausy is what is on the page) when describing the reward the desire demon gives you. And yes, Kolgrim only teaches Reaver. Also for consideration, the hermit in the Brecilian Forest is a supposed blood mage(Zathrian relates that detail if you talk to him after encountering the hermit).

Question about Blood Sacrifice Edit

I'm miles away from my ps3 and so unable to try this myself, but the description of Blood Sacrifice states "The blood mage sucks the life-force from an ally..." and the description of Blood Control says "...making the target an ally of the caster..."! So is it possible to drain life from a blood controlled enemy? R0ND0 19:15, December 3, 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately not :( If you try to do it, the timer on the spell will reset as if you used it but a "not an ally" notification will come up and not take the life force. XannyB

UnlockingEdit

Noticed this just now, but... why do people keep insisting there are other ways to unlock the Blood Mage specialization? I'd like to see a youtube vid of the Blood Mage specialization being unlocked in some manner OTHER than dealing with the Desire Demon. Until then, I'm deleting this rumor. - Ancestralmask 20:24, December 3, 2009 (UTC)

  • Hi! I don't have an account here but I hope I can still point something out. Doesn't Avernus' alchemical concoction that you can drink in Warden's Keep unlock the Blood Mage specialization? I could have *sworn* that after drinking it I had unlocked the Blood Mage specialization and gained the Diabolist achievement, but I decided to load to an earlier save point because I didn't want to go down that path and instead decided the second time to break the vial instead. Hopefully you or someone else can confirm this and if true add it to the article. Thanks! -- 68.200.164.3 21:41, January 10, 2010 (UTC)
I don't have Warden's Keep, but if you loaded an earlier save and did NOT have Blood Mage unlocked, then no, it didn't unlock the subclass. Once you've unlocked a specialization, it's unlocked for all records. I think the vial in question probably taught the two new Power of Blood spells. - Ancestralmask 02:01, January 14, 2010 (UTC)
  • No it has nothing to with blood magic, it enhances your warden abilities no matter what class you are
  • I added the section below to the Blood Mage page because I saw it in an Arcane Warrrior build. I did not test this information. I have since tested it with a Rogue on a PS3 console. It did not work, so I removed it. I am adding it here just in case this does work for a PC, XBox, or maybe you have to be a mage for the dialog option to appear. Sorry to all if this entry confused you. --Portos247 February 6, 2010
    • "There is also a way to unlock the Blood Mage completely unrelated to the Redcliffe questline, namely the Elven Alienage. When you (eventually) get to the bottom of the quarantine of the alienage, you'll find that the person that's responsible is in fact a Blood Mage named Caladrius. He'll beg and grovel for this life, and you can actually get him to teach you the Blood Mage specialization this way. Note that most party member's won't like this one bit, and you'll lose some approval, as opposed to the method above (if you do it right, that is)."
  • There is another way to unlock both the Blood Mage and Reaver specializations, thanks to Awakening. Have your PC--doesn't matter what class--buy the appropriate manuals at the Crown and Lion in Amaranthine. Using the manuals will unlock the specializations for any characters in both Awakening and Origins. I've got to think that this is a bug that will be fixed in a future patch, and it's totally cheating, but it's the only way to get those specializations without making deals with shady entities. Rosenoire 01:59, April 12, 2010 (UTC)
  • There seems to be a bug in the Bug, once activated the bloodmage specialization will be available for other save games. For example you can then use an older Savegame and still beat the desire demon. July 15, 2010

Formula Edit

Can someone provide a formula concerning power of blood mage spells as it is done in other spells sections or tell me how to find it so i do it myself?--Riv8 15:04, December 6, 2009 (UTC)

Done.

Why does Blood Magic keep deactivating after a short time or after a fight? It doesn't seem sustainable for every long.

Blood magic is deactivated every mode change (combat enter/exit, CutScenes, etc).
So are Captivate Song, Pain, Berserk, Feign Death and Miasma.
I set Blood Magic in top line of tactics for my blood mage. But it kept casting it OOC. So i found no way to autoactivate it on combat enter yet.

'Enemy: Nearest Enemy > Blood Magic' will allow for the character to only activate it when it sees an enemy.

Unlock Update Edit

Just wanted to make it aware that I made some revisions to the Unlocking section, merely giving a bit more detail as to the possible scenarios.

"Blood Mages in Theadas" has been destroyed. Edit

Some smart ass rewrote the Blood Mages in Thedaes tab with "i like to piss in my pants". Thought I should let someone know it needs to be rewritten.

Thanks for the heads up. The vandal has been blocked and the info has been restored. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 23:21, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Undocumented Effect, Blocks Mana RegenerationEdit

After looking inside of scripts in the toolset, it seems Blood Magic has an undocumented effect which negates all mana regeneration while it's active. This is also very likely the reason they chose to make it deactivate after combat; so you're mana could regenerate.

It seems to me this is meant to be toggled on and off, used only when you really need an extra spell..24.247.248.93 21:32, February 10, 2010 (UTC)

I was wrong, it's one of many unused effects 24.247.248.93 22:19, March 13, 2010 (UTC)

Blood Magic and Health Regeneration Edit

I'm sure somebody has thought of this before but I can't find anything about it. Everybody knows that activating Blood Magic reduces healing to 10%. My question is whether or not this has any effect on Health Regeneration, particularly during combat. I don't have the time to test it out myself but if anybody knows or can find out I would appreciate it. -- AntiWorld 00:28, February 22, 2010 (UTC)

On a PS3, I made Morrigan a Blood Mage and equipped her with the Lifegiver, which gives +6 combat health regeneration. She regenerates about that amount of health each tick during combat, and I have no other explanation for it, so I assume that Blood Magic does not affect health regeneration. 66.92.232.102 (talk) 23:37, February 5, 2011 (UTC)

About "Blood magic guide"Edit

The first paragraph of this sections is obviously written by a person who has tried to use blood magic but he couldn't manage it, telling that to not pick an specialization at all is better than using blood magic. When we all know that blood magic is one of the better specializations, if used properly that gives us almost infinite resources to cast all the spells we want. So I think that should be checked.

Thanks, and sorry if I haven't expressed mysef correctly, I'm not English.

Grey Wardens and Blood MagicEdit

"Despite blood magic being banned in Ferelden, the Grey Wardens are allowed to use it as a means to fight the darkspawn. This is confirmed if the Warden speaks with Duncan on the topic during the Mage Origin. Duncan states further that Grey Wardens have even intentionally become abominations."

Am I completely missing something out or is this just an unconfirmed rumor? I just replayed the beginning of the mage origin because I couldnt remember him telling this. I tried all dialogue options I could find but all he says about the topic is the story that he once saw a blood mage fighting templars. Nothing about GW becoming abominations.Kaerendar 14:44, April 9, 2010 (UTC)
Just had a look through the toolset and this was what I found:
Warden: Have you ever seen someone use blood magic?
Duncan: Once, in my youth, just after I had joined the Grey Wardens. I was traveling with my mentor. We encountered a group of templars hunting a blood mage. They were quite far away, so I cannot be sure of what I saw. He forced some of the templars to turn on their fellows. It was dreadful to behold. He would have escaped had he not overlooked one templar, who snuck up behind him and cleaved his head in two.
Warden: Blood Magic is evil.
Duncan: There have been mages within the Grey Wardens who have needed to resort to blood magic to deal with the darkspawn.
So confirmation on using blood magic, but I couldn't find anything on abominations either, so I'm going to remove that point. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 05:03, April 10, 2010 (UTC)
It's sort of an absence of evidence, but none of the NPCs in the game seem to react at all to the PC Warden taking the Blood Magic specialization and using the powers. Rosenoire 01:13, May 9, 2010 (UTC)
It may be a little to late for such response, nevertheless: "Darkspawns are a greater threat than blood mages, even abominations. It takes decades for the world to recover from a Blight. I wish the Chantry could see that. We need to stop at nothing to defeat darkspawn..." - Duncan, when asked about mages in Cailan's army. I dont't really know how to intepret this, but it could be origin of discussed sentence.Wiki Kaczor (talk) 08:21, March 20, 2014 (UTC)
In the Warden's Keep DLC, the Warden tells Levi that wardens are allowed to practice blood magic to fight the Darkspawn. WRFan (talk) 11:25, June 19, 2010 (UTC)

No more deactivation for Blood Magic Edit

It is possible to disable the deactivation of this modal ability. The function is located in the Include file ability_h.nss, which is used by the module_core.nss script. Comment out the deactivation in the include file and recompile the module_core script.

(Can you give a step by step instruction to deactivate this?)

Frankly, I do not understand why this ability is automatically deactivated outside of combat anyway. WRFan (talk) 17:20, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Uldred not a blood mage? Edit

The article suggests that Uldred may not have been a blood mage. What is the reasoning behind this? He summons daemons through blood power, not lyrium power. That would constitute as blood magic. Elshiro (talk) 16:59, June 26, 2010 (UTC)

their is no proof that he used blood magic he used demonolgy wich is the practice of summoning demons into are world not blood magic.

Still though, he uses the life energy of the mages, not lyrium, to summon those demons. --Elshiro (talk) 18:15, October 3, 2010 (UTC)

In his conversation in the tower with the warden, he insinuates that Uldred is dead and that he a demon has possession of the body.

Making Wynne a Blood Mage vs. Anders a blood mage. Edit

I greatly appreciate that they made it so that Anders acknowledges the choice to make him a blood mage, unlike Wynne. It always annoyed me that you could make her a blood mage in Origins, yet she continued to preach against maleficar, despite being one herself. AbsolutGrndZer0 (talk) 20:40, September 4, 2010 (UTC) I suspect the reason for that is because the writers never thought someone would make her a blood mage

blood magic and death magic/drain life Edit

Does blood magic's healing penalty affect drain life/death magic's health absorption? Ripstrawberry (talk) 13:57, September 24, 2010 (UTC)

It seems to, even though story-wise, it probably should not. You are, after all, stealing life from another creature for yourself... 66.92.232.102 (talk) 23:40, February 5, 2011 (UTC)

Using Irving in the Fade Edit

What level of persuasion is necessary to force Irving into the Fade? Can he be used to learn Blood Mage, or does he force combat like Morrigan and Wynne?

irving never goes into the fade were did you learn this.--(80.42.152.206 (talk) 16:58, October 15, 2010 (UTC))

You can get Irving to go into the fade. My character had three levels in persuasion and I think around 16 cunning not totally sure.- - darb86 15:22, October 16, 2010 (UTC)

Combining with other specialties Edit

Can anyone add a section on this (i.e. what a good Blood Mage may use as a secondary specialization), kind of like the Arcane Warrior article. More specifically, anyone every try to combine this with the Spirit Healer? I know they're on opposite spectrums, but could one perhaps use a lot of health, switch, heal (via mana), and then restart? Or would this not work? --68.40.243.178 (talk) 04:30, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

Works perfectly.

How does one make Wynne a blood mage? Edit

I had played the game before on a friends 360, and finally bought the ultimate edition to play myself.. and i wanted to make Wynne a blood mage, but i don't know how? Any tips? --—Preceding unsigned comment added by 32.160.61.202 (talk)

All you need to do is unlock the blood mage specialization and then give it to Wynne with her level 14 specialization point.  ✪Aedan Cousland | Talk | Contr 19:24, January 1, 2011 (UTC)

So i have to play the game once up to the point where i can do the blood ritual/get the deamon to teach me as a Mage? Then i can play a game where i am a warrior? after it has been unlocked? and give it to Wynne --

Pretty much, you can also buy the manual at the Crown and Lion Inn in Awakening. It's all there in the blood mage article.  ✪Aedan Cousland | Talk | Contr 21:13, January 1, 2011 (UTC)

Unlocked Blood Mage Without Knowing It. Edit

Hi, I just had a new playthrough where I wanted to unlock every specialization again because i find it fun as it is an RPG game. However, I know that the only way to unlock Blood Mage is either being the Mage (Warden yourself) and enter the fade where you are supposed to save Connor from the desire demon. And also that you can unlock the Blood Mage specialization through Awakenings.

But here is the funny part. I had just completed the Circle Tower Main quest and killed Uldred and all that. Turned in a few quests I had as well. And I was in Orzammar and was going to level up Wynne as I have her as my healer now. And what amazed me, well, more shocked me that I had Blood Mage unlocked, even though I haven't done any other part to as in unlocking it from Desire Demon or Awakenings.

So here I am wondering now, could there have been a way to unlocking it somehow from where I have been playing, or was that just some randomish bug or glitch or whatever you wanna call it right. As Uldred do use Blood Magic and if you manage to save all Mages there could be a slight chance of unlocking it maybe. I do not know to be honest, but that is what troubles me now, as it came as a shock to me on how the heck I opened it up. As I have no clue when or where it happened either. If anyone could make any input to this would be appreciated so others may know.--Zerio87 (talk) 22:09, December 21, 2012 (UTC)

Well, unlocks carry across all your games as long as you don't completely purge all Dragon Age files on your Console/PC. So if one of your other characters DID buy the Blood Mage tome in Awakening (or was a mage who got it from the Desire Demon), then brand new characters will all have it. Odds are this is what happened with you since you used the words "unlock every specialization again" in your first sentence. :) AbsolutGrndZer0 (talk) 22:31, December 21, 2012 (UTC)

Yes I did indeed say that. But to extra explain it. I had every specialization in the lockbar. As in locked, which means I have to unlock them again in order to use them. Before i started anew (and that was when i bought DA2 because I wanted to play differently and then finish Origins first playthrough then jump into DA2.) I deleted everything on my console all saves and options. As I wanted to start anew from the beginning with nothing unlocked. Because I did one playthrough with warrior first and I unlocked all warrior specializations. But none of the rogue or mages. And more strangley though. I went to the create new character and I had Blood Mage unlocked after I played with rogue after my circle tower main quest, but nothing else of the others in mage or rogue. Then I went into awakenings. To see there if I had them as well in character creation screen and I had them from warrior and blood mage only in origins. But, strangley everything else was unlocked as well as inclduing the new ones in awakening. Now i don't even know what has happened at all, if the game has rememberd it all or if something triggered it to unlock them all. And I did purge everything. But now I am more confused than knowing. It won't matter now really to be honest, I was just shocked that. Why couldn't I be able to choose all specializations at first then when I first deleted everything from the beginning on my console, but I couldn't, but now, everything is unlocked. This game amaze me sometimes. Oh well, I supposed nothing happened after Circle Tower Main Quest. To clarify that then. I guess my game apparently remembered from previous old saves even though I deleted them.--Zerio87 (talk) 23:09, December 21, 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, if it's a console version then it could have remembered stuff. Especially if you just deleted saves and options... in order to truly delete everything you would have to, at least on the Xbox 360 go to the first page where all your games are listed highlight DAO, hit Y then "Delete Game" which would then delete everything including the DLC and hidden files (which odds are it's hidden files that show what you've unlocked). Other than that, I have no idea might have been a opportune glitch otherwise heh. AbsolutGrndZer0 (talk) 23:29, December 21, 2012 (UTC)

Other way of unlocking Edit

Don't know how i did this, but at the start of the game, in lothering i was doing the trap glitch to get xp and found that i could unlock the blood mage specialization, but on the wiki it says i need to do the arl of redcliff quest, which i have not started yet. 82.0.20.178 (talk) 01:39, March 9, 2014 (UTC)
