The Second Orlesian Invasion of Ferelden was ordered in 8:24 Blessed by the Orlesian Emperor Reville, commonly known as the "Mad Emperor".[1]
Background[]
The Vigil's Keep is the first Fereldan fortress to fall to the Orlesians.[2]
Battle of Lothering[]
At the Battle of Lothering in 8:24 Blessed, Ardal Cousland, Teyrn of Highever, is slain defending his king, Vanedrin Theirin.[3] The King is killed in the same year, and Calenhad the Great's sword, Nemetos, is lost.[4]
Post-Lothering[]
Though Vanderin is succeeded by his son, King Brandel Theirin, the young ruler is unable to unite the country beneath him, and for the next two decades, Ferelden is mired in blood and battle. In 8:44 Blessed, twenty years after the invasion first started, Orlais finally sacks the city of Denerim, claiming victory in Ferelden and driving King Brandel into hiding.[5]
Aftermath[]
Orlais occupies Ferelden until 9:00 Dragon, marking a dark period in Fereldan history.[6][7]
Though routed, the king now known as "Brandel the Defeated" continues to rebel against the Orlesians. For the most part his efforts are inefficient as most nobles believe that Ferelden is truly lost.[8]
Notes[]
- On page 133 of Dragon Age: The World of Thedas Volume 1, it is stated that in 9:00 Dragon, Prince Maric defeated King Meghren and freed Ferelden from the Orlesian occupation. However, according to epilogue of Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne, the duel happened three years after the battle of the River Dane, which took place in the last year of the Blessed Age - this would put the end of Orlesian occupation at 9:2 Dragon.
