The Magrallen is a Tevinter device empowered by blood magic and dating back to an ancient time when the Dreamers commanded the Fade. The Magrallen's powerful magic is the "legacy" of the Tevinter Imperium.[1]

Magister Aurelian Titus sought to use the device to restore the Tevinter Imperium to its former glory. To this end, Titus empowered it with with the blood of King Maric Theirin, who, like all descendants of Calenhad Theirin, had the blood of a Great dragon flow in his veins.[2]

During the combined pirate and Qunari assault on the fortress of Ath Velanis, where the Magrallen is being held, Varric Tethras stumbles upon the device and shoots it with his crossbow, accidentally causing everyone within proximity of the fortress to be drawn into the Fade. Varric then searches the Fade for his companions and frees them from their respective dreams and nightmares. He finds King Maric and his son Alistair sharing the same dream, and the three of them join forces with the pirate captain Isabela and magister Maevaris Tilani to hunt down Titus.

During the final confrontation, Aurelian Titus conjures the head of a Great dragon to attack Maric, but it cannot harm him, since Maric's blood fuels the Magrallen, putting him in complete control of that portion of the Fade. Maric then slays Titus and the party leaves the Fade. In the waking world, however, they find Maric near death, exhausted by the years of powering the Magrallen with his blood. Alistair then destroys the Magrallen to end his father's suffering.
