Lemet and his friend Thren come home late through the slums of Halamshiral, discussing the past of the Dales. On the way, the carriage of the Orlesian nobleman Lord Mainserai passes by. However, a young elven boy throws a rock at it in anger for the death of his mother. Lemet rushes to get the child to safety as Mainserai's human guards scour the streets for the perpetrator.
Lemet and the boy are discovered, and Lord Mainserai demands to know who was responsible. However, the guard who found Lemet and the elven boy relents and does not lay the blame on the child, taking Lemet instead. Lemet is killed and his body mutilated in his place.
Lemet's death becomes a catalyst in the slums for a call for mien'harel--justice, or rebellion, depending on the interpretation--and Thren and the boy work with the thieves' guild to upset Halamshiral in outrage.
