Hafter was a crossbreed warhound and companion to Kell, a member of the legendary Grey Wardens.

Kell claims that Hafter had also ingested the Darkspawn blood during the Joining ritual of the Grey Wardens, making him one of that order as well.
When Kell sacrificed himself to save King Maric, Fiona and Duncan, Hafter did not want to let him go alone. Kell did all he could to make Hafter stay with the rest of the party, but the hound did not listen and went on a final battle with his master. Both of them died in The Deep Roads.
