The Grand Cathedral, located in the opulent Orlesian capital of Val Royeaux, is the heart of the Orlesian Chantry and the seat of its leader, the Divine. It is the only place where the Chant of Light is sung in full, a process which takes a full two weeks to complete. In the audience chamber stands the Sunburst Throne, a seat reserved for the Divine.

History[]

The chamber with the Sunburst Throne

In -15 Ancient,[1] as his campaigns to unify the disparate cults of the Maker met heavier resistance, Kordillus Drakon, then a prince of the Ciriane, began building a great temple to the Maker on the foundations of Jeshavis' ancient fortress. By -3 Ancient, the temple had been built and Drakon had united most of the Ciriane tribes. He was crowned the first emperor of the new Empire of Orlais. His first act was to establish Andrastianism as the empire's official religion, founding the Chantry. The Grand Cathedral has served as the center of the Chantry's power since.[2]

Four years later, in 1:1 Divine, Justinia I was selected to become the Chantry's first Divine, ruling from the still unfinished temple, marking the beginning of the Divine Age.

The Grand Cathedral was only completed nearly two hundred years later, in 2:99 Glory. The Towers Age was named in honor of its two large towers, visible for miles.

Divine Theodosia II, who reigned sometime in or after the Steel Age,[3] is said to have given birth on the steps of the Grand Cathedral in front of a crowd of faithful. She was removed from her post shortly after.[4]
