Hi!

I've run into a complete game breaker of a bug which I'm hoping someone can solve.

I was following the quest "What Pride Had Wrought", and made it to the part where I had to choose to follow Calpernia or to complete the rituals. I completed all the rituals, and proceeded into the temple. Having wondered around for a while, and getting frustrated by the fact I could not make the quest progress despite following to the quest marker, I got a bit desperate.

I decided to jump from the waterfall at the well of sorrows...

Well, needless to say that wasn't the route the game intended me to take, however to my surprise I didn't die. In fact I continued to fall for several more levels, before finally reaching a grass plain. Clearly I was never meant to make it to this area, and I was able to run endlessly. Since there was no way back to where I wanted to go, and my autosave had written over a safe area to return to, I was glad to see that I was able to fast travel back to Skyhold.

However, since returning, I have found I cannot re-enter the zone via the map, or via the war table. The quest at the War table simply says "Completed", and gives no option to travel there. However, my journal still has the quest at the stage when the bug occurred.

Clearly with no previous save points, and no way to continue the quest, this is a massive game breaker unless I can reset the quest.

Has anyone ever experienced this, or know of any way to reset the quest chain? I'm happy to start again from the beginning of the quest, since otherwise I'll just have to bin the game. No use continuing when I can never reach the end of the story.

Many thanks in advance, even if the news is grim!

You'll have to restart the quest. When loading a game, you usually get the option to load an autosave, a manual save, a "milestone" save, or to restart the quest. If you have no manual saves (why?) and your autosave/milestone save are somehow after jumping from the waterfall (which would happen with autosave if you entered Skyhold, but the milestone save should be just before facing Calperina) then restarting the quest is your only option. In the future, I'd suggest having at least two or three separate manual save files, because you never know when something like this might happen. Silver Warden (talk) 20:15, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

Yes I now realise not having multiple saves was a very bad mistake. I've got around 60 hours of gameplay, and had not experienced any bugs so far, so I guess I just let me guard down!

Restarting the mission isn't an option - I simply cannot get back to the quest area anymore. I'm guessing that I should never have been able to fast travel away from that zone, and I was only able to do so because of the glitch. When I managed to get back to Skyhold, I assumed I'd dodged a bullet, saved the game (yes, stupidly over the original, since that was several hours old) and called it a night. It was only the next time I played that I realised I couldn't get back to the quest area. I've added some screenshots below.

I guess the only hope I'm clinging to is some kind of console command to reset the quest, or some way of getting myself back to the zone. I'm on PC using a controller, just in case that causes any confusion.

I see. You can't restart the quest because the game thinks you completed it. What about a milestone save? I know the game makes one right before facing Calperina, did it create a new one afterwards (thus overwriting the old one)? If not then you'll have to find some way to edit your save file so that WPHW was never started. Or else just start over. I don't know how to edit save files or what console commands are available but there is probably something that allows you to set the game at a certain point. Search for them online - some online walkthroughs and FAQs also have "cheats" sections which have console commmands for PC games.
Also, is it possible to just start the next main quest? Try talking to Morrigan, maybe the game defaults to her having ::SPOILER:: if ::SPOILER:: doesn't do it. Silver Warden (talk) 21:03, December 19, 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately none of my saves are prior to the bug, so I'm stuck with trying to repair. It seems as soon as I fast travelled out of the zone, both the auto and milestone saves were overwritten. Still cursing how idiotic it was to then save over my original manual save. But, no point crying over spilled milk.

I've looked into various mods and save game editors. None of the current mods I can see dabble with editing quests, and the save game editors mainly focus on editing the world state rather than the characters current progression. I've looked for any events I can change that would skip ahead the storyline, but I've not come across any yet. I'd need someone who has done this, or is more experienced, to point me in the right direction.

Incredibly frustrating. I imagine there is a line of text somewhere that can either define where my character is (which would allow me to place my character back in the quest zone) or one that can set the quest as completed and allow me to progress. Without help from someone who knows where this is and how to edit it, I'm likely to write off the game. At the minute I just can't bring myself round to starting from the beginning!

Thank you for your replies Silver, much appreciated.

Well you could always try Bioware tech support, or at least posting on their forums about this bug. This is a pretty serious bug, and even if no one has ever encountered it before, Bioware should at least know about it to prevent other people from doing the same thing.
