Hi there! I wonder, how do you pronounce Rhys? So that it rhymes with rice (IPA [ɹaɪs] for those familiar with phonetic notation), with kiss ([ɹɪs]), or maybe with cease ([ɹiːs]), or maybe in yet another way? Not having any other sources beyond DA:I and constantly skipping Cole's personal quest and, in fact, any dialogue with him, I've been in doubt for some time.

Also, so that the topic would not essentially become a question-answer-closing case, I invite anyone with similar doubts to post them down here, for quick reference's sake. Also, maybe some information on pronunciation in articles referring to particular characters? 83.25.61.244 (talk) 13:16, February 18, 2015 (UTC)

I'm about 99% sure it's pronounced like "reese" (rhyming with "cease"). I think Cole says it a few times, plus there's a guy I work with whose name is spelled like that and it's pronounced that way. --Will3784 (talk) 14:11, February 18, 2015 (UTC)
If you want to hear the name a bunch of times, play Tales from Borderlands. There's some banter about pronouncing Rhys in the first half of episode 1. 12.146.29.230 (talk) 17:36, February 18, 2015 (UTC)
Rhys is a Welsh name, and it is pronounced like "Reese". Like Jonathan Rhys-Davies, the Welsh actor. You can put it into Google and there are a few different pages on it.  :) --Geth1138 (talk) 10:55, February 22, 2015 (UTC)

With that settled, I have one... Katriel. Is is 'Cat-tree-el' or is it Katrell' with the 'trell' like in trellis and all one syllable? --24.165.110.135 (talk) 02:55, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

I would guess the cat one because then it would be similar to Uriel or Gabriel.
EDIT: Googled the name; thinkbabynames.com says that it's supposed to be ca-tree-el, and it means "my crown is god". 12.146.29.230 (talk) 08:10, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

A friend of a friend is called Rhys and they pronounce it the same way they do with Reese. But since this is Dragon Age, you never know. Wynne was a weird name, and between the games the pronouncation of "eluvian" changes from "ehloovheeahn" to "elooviahn". So you never know how it is pronounced in-universe.User signature henioo henioo (da talk page) 08:30, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I've noticed that for DA they make up the names of things but the names for people are actual names. Generally old Gaelic or Welsh or Celtic or something like that. 'Wynne' is a real name. But for things it is anybody's guess. I know Arlathan is pronounced 'Ar-LA-than' with the a in 'la' being short and also 'AR-la-thin' with the a in 'la' being long. A-post-tate with a short 'o' and 'A-pa-state'. That's probably what you get when you have lots of voice actors working independently.--24.165.110.135 (talk) 16:34, February 23, 2015 (UTC)

My question is Lavellan - It's 'LAH-vell-AHN' according to the wikia, but in-game it seems to be pronounced "lah-VELL-en". I know the listed pronunciation is attributed to a dev but that's not how it sounds to me when I play. Shenachie (talk) 15:42, February 24, 2015 (UTC)
