So, we bounced around the idea of revamping the forum headers for a while now. I took the time to mock up a couple of designs for the new forum headers. I'm leaning towards the glossy design over the classic splatter ones. I'm personally leaning towards Style 5. Or some variant of it. Let me know how you feel about it, and why.

Keep the following in mind

  1. Page width or title width?
  2. Separate icons? No icons? Floating icons? Integrated icons?
  3. Plain font? Fancy font?
  4. Glossy background? Splatter background?
  5. Which icon to use?

Leave your feedback here! Credits go to a an old friend who doesn't seem to be around much anymore.

ActionEdit

Based on the feedback below, I will be implementing #7. Most of the feedback has issues with the font of #5 which is corrected in #7. I will also be (eventually) implementing #1 in our monobook skin! Everyone's happy! -- tierrie talk contr 21:10, September 6, 2011 (UTC)

@King Cousland, the icons for the forums are uploaded as File:Wiki Discussion.png,File:Lore Discussion.png and File:Game Discussion.png. You or I can start another discussion for the icon discussion. -- tierrie talk contr 01:38, September 7, 2011 (UTC)
I will work on the forum listing next. -- tierrie talk contr 01:38, September 7, 2011 (UTC)

CommentsEdit

I also like Style 5. It's sleek, smooth and fits in well with the general wiki style. The others seem like they'd appear quite clunky and outdated. I support Style 5 though I do have one small gripe: the Warden-Commander's griffon. I like it, but it seems like it puts too much emphasis on Origins IMHO. Elementalist KC. | talk 00:36, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

I'm not particularly attached to the image. We can pick something different, or even better, how about one icon per forum? This is really your domain so I'm not sure what your plans are with the forums. But I can potentially envision a DAO one, with the Warden crest, a DA2 with a Kirkwall crest, and so forth. How does that sound? -- tierrie talk contr 00:41, September 3, 2011 (UTC)
D-day also asked me to take a look at Fallout's forum. She thinks we can stand to update ours to look a bit sleeker. I agreed and am exploring ideas for a redesign of our forum area. FYI. -- tierrie talk contr 00:43, September 3, 2011 (UTC)
All sounds great to me :) Just to be clear how would we spilt the sections up? I envison something like this:
Wiki Discussion
Wiki Discussion
General Discussion
Game Discussion
Novel Discussion
Film Discussion
World Discussion
Lore Discussion
Location Discussion
History Discussion
Other
Game Help
Off-topic Discussion

Just an example and not intended as actual sections but I'd be eager to introduce the Vault's style. Elementalist KC. | talk 01:09, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

From a readability standpoint, I like #2 the best. It has the clearest text/background combination, and I like the circle with image look to the left. Individualized images based on the title are a great idea. Legionnaire Scout *talk* 01:11, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

I agree. The font on style#5 decreases legibility. I don't personally find it very attractive, either. Fritzywiggins (talk) 17:16, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

I think that #5 is the nicest stylistically, but as Legionnaire Scout mentioned, the legibility leaves a bit to be desired. I'd be going for a sans serif font as it just gives a bit of a cleaner look, which I think would be in keeping with the overall style these are heading. The background of the headers is sleek, but the red writing over it isn't really working. I also don't think the text needs to be that big. I think a combination of #5's look with #1's font (sans serif, bold, white). S13Kuro (talk) 04:23, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

I like the look of, and the ability to read, #1 and #2. They're tied for me. Mrs.AlistairTheirin 06:06, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

Alrighty, I like 1 and 5. One because it is neat and compact, and five because it matches in nicely the design scheme of the front page. As to the other points, I think title width looks nicer, I think we have enough of the splatter background so I'd support glossy and I like the idea of an icon, but I fear we are going to struggle to find a neutral one. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 11:34, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

That was my concern too, but if we adopt a Vault-style forum and split and expand the sections of discussions, I like Tierrie's suggestion of having different icons for each section. Elementalist KC. | talk 11:39, September 3, 2011 (UTC)
Mmm Tierrie's idea sounds like a good one. If we can find a way so that it doesn't look like we are favouring any particular games we should be right. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 12:03, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

Number 5. I prefer page width since it looks more like an actual header than simply a "stamp" (e.g., section headers h1 and h2 are underlined full width). I suggest to keep using a normal font instead, and white color (see #7), as suggested by S13Kuro. --D. (talk · contr) 14:32, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

I think that looks good. I'm split over which would be better, title/page width. Page width would probably give it a cleaner look over all, being the same throughout the sections, but I like the title width as it doesn't have the blank space area after the header details end. I think I'd go for the page width though as it will give a definitive break up between the header and the body of text below, leaving the space to the right of it may cause it to appear a little bit messy.

Are you thinking you want to include an icon for each section of the forum? Only thing is how will it all be arranged when listed on the single page? First idea is that we could take the general look of the icons on the homepage, having them all contained within a circle. If that's the case, if say for example the Grey Warden crest is the icon for one, is that changed at all? Or would the cut out look you have for them in this thread be the look you'd go for with the icons? I'm thinking, if we're to have all of the various new forum sections presented together, it would look a lot nicer if they were all in the same style as the current home page icons. The homepage as it is now gives a sort of 'button' feel to the links. In the sense that you get the impression that by pressing them, something will happen. I've always liked the little circle style of the homepage, unique to this wiki from what I've seen of others. Gives it a contemporary feel even though all the artwork is fantasy based.

What if instead of a list, the different sections are presented in the same way as the homepage? All having the circled image with the section name underneath. And when clicked, transition into the section's own path with the listing of the latest topics? Like how clicking on the 'Companions' link then gives you the list of all the companions throughout the games. I don't even know if that'd work for the forum section, I just find it a nice navigation experience.

EDIT: Looking at the sections titles etc. When checking out the Fallout forum area, the way they've all been titled seems to look a bit all over the place. Firstly, the fact that just about all of them start with 'Fallout-' muddles it all as it makes it harder to work out exactly what each section contains. It's in the Fallout forum, so chances are it's all going to pertain to the series, more or less. So if we're to go a similar way, with the list of sections presented by KC, condensing of the words used, I think would help in streamlining the experience. Also, in the Fallout forum there isn't much of a differentiation between the headings and the areas listed within them, such as 'Fallout Discussion' with the 'Fallout 3 General Discussion' areas within in etc.

So I think it may be better having it set out more like:

Wiki Discussion:

  • Wiki

General Discussion:

  • Game
  • Film
  • Novel

World Discussion:

  • History
  • Location
  • Lore

Other:

  • Game Help
  • Off-Topic

Once you've nutted out exactly which sections you want, go on to figuring out their corresponding icons. S13Kuro (talk) 20:59, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

When I suggested the Vault's forums, it wasn't about the way their sections are broken into... but rather the way they are listing the threads so that it's not as narrowed as here. But I don't have a problem with changing the way they are listed on Forum:Index, but I think it's definitely overkill to have everything split into so many sections: do we really need them? I believe we should keep this simple:
Game Discussion
Game Help
Lore Discussion
Wiki Discussion
--D. (talk · contr) 21:45, September 3, 2011 (UTC)

True, true. See whatcha mean, with the Vault having just Topic and Last Edit as columns with the usernames involved just being side notes. Also, if you compare this wiki's forum to that of the Vault's, the boxes that surround the Vault's are a nice detail. Break up each thread nicely. S13Kuro (talk) 00:41, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

You said "The homepage as it is now gives a sort of 'button' feel to the links. In the sense that you get the impression that by pressing them, something will happen.". Could you explain what you mean by "homepage"? Is this the main page? Or your personal page? And, how does this pertain to a forum? I'm afraid I don't quite understand the point you're making and if you could clarify, that would be very helpful. -- tierrie talk contr 01:23, September 4, 2011 (UTC)
Um, by 'homepage' I mean... The homepage? The initial page that loads once you've entered. I was saying that the way the links to the various sections are set up, it has a sort of 'button' feel, like the large circles are there to be pressed and to take you to a section all about whatever the image depicts. I just find it a nice visual as soon as you enter this wiki, and that it's unique from what I've seen. I was suggesting, that if it's possible, to maybe consider incorporating this navigation method into the forum section, as I like it and think it may be a more interesting way of traveling throughout the wiki.
As it is now, the forum is just the small box off to the side on the homepage. If it were possible to incorporate the forum and it's subsequent areas into the main links section and use that to navigate instead of the simple list of topics as it is now, I think it could be a more interesting way to browse. Was just throwing it out there. As I said, I don't know if it'd even work. But seeing as there'll only be 3 or 4 forum sections is it not entirely possible that these could be arranged in such a way that you could navigate them in the same manner as the main links? Even if it was just the Forum:Index section that changed to this method, which took you to the standard forum set up within each section. S13Kuro (talk) 03:32, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

I think whatever the design we are going to use out priority should be given to the "readability". Also I like the "first style" from below list, mainly because its' colour theme suits this Wikis theme but others are not and the icon is good but it represents Grey Wardens only. I prefer to have a dragon, if possible :) .

Also no need to subdivide a particular forum into several sub-forums, if the users are going to rarely use them. Besides too much of sub-forums will make the user wonder where to add the topic; for example we don't need separate Lore Discussion and Location Discussion, because in most cases Locations have their own Lore. Same goes with History. Let's keep the things simple. Also "Game Help" is not off-topic, it is about the game.

The following is my suggestion.

Dragon Age Discussion

  • Game Discussion
  • Other Media Discussion
  • Lore Discussion
  • Game Help

Wiki Discussion

Off-topic Discussion

-- Snfonseka (Talk) 06:21, September 4, 2011 (UTC)

Just a quick reminder that this topic is for discussing the styling of the forum headers, if people would like to discuss adding new discussion categories (off-topic etc.) they should start a new discussion. Friendship smallLoleil Talk 07:35, September 4, 2011 (UTC)
