So with the release of all the new character bios, I've noticed there's been a bit of an issue with editors copy/pasting the BioWare descriptions into the backgrounds without making it super clear where they came from. I have issues with this both because it may be a copyright violation and also because the showy marketing writing doesn't necessarily fit with the overall tone of the wiki's articles.
It's not explicitly stated how editor's should handle promotional text, but I would like it to be. I see two options (but would love to hear more if people have them). One is that we have some sort of "Official description" heading and we then use block quote and treat it like we do the synopses for books, or two (and my preferred option) we ask editors to use the information in these articles, but properly paraphrase them to fit the tone of the wiki. - I prefer the second option. The entire bio doesn't really need to be reproduced in the articles, seeing as how most of them are quite long. Maybe a small excerpt would be good, but not the whole thing, and the link to the official description can just be added to the end of the article. Some good examples are the new location articles. They've all used the official website synopses as inspiration but are not verbatim. I'm surprised there aren't any guidelines set regarding copy/pasting text from other sources without proper credit, nor anything regarding plagiarism. --Kelcat (talk) 01:48, June 26, 2014 (UTC)
- My vote also goes for the second option for the reasons Kelcat listed above. King Cousland | Talk 21:52, June 26, 2014 (UTC)
