Companions, love'em or hate them?

I maybe the only one but sometimes I really hate having companions. Sometimes I'd like to just go it alone. I get the felling that if it's just me I won't have to deal with companions like Alistair. It would have been better if I could murder knife Alistair anytime I like.
Well thats my rant. Feel free to tell me your companions you love or hate or if you like to have the one man army type character like Fable?

I like that you've got companions. But it does become quite weird that they follow you EVERYWHERE. Especially so since some of them aren't unemployed, i.e. I take the captain of the guard with me to a brothel. I'd love to have some parts of the game where I can be just by myself, say go buy a gift for my LI without her/him seeing me do it. Henio0 (talk) 10:40, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
It's entirely possible to solo the DA games, you only have to bring companions on missions where they're locked in. Kestrella (talk) 11:05, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, but the game is designed so that it is encouraged to do play with a party. What I'm saying is, I'd welcome missions that required of you to play some parts of it alone. :) Henio0 (talk) 12:30, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
I have pretty much the opposite problem. I want the party size of Baldur's Gate back.--Navarion (talk) 12:36, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
I think it's about time that RPGs evolved past this need to have a strict four-man party. Some quests would really call for a smaller team, a la Mark of the Assassin, while others practically demand full-party action, like the DA2 endgame. A flexible combat system should allow for both styles and even, dare I say, the freedom to choose how we want to approach a given situation. Son Goharotto (talk) 13:52, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
I prefer the three companions setup, five is just too much to manage. Also you can't really kill Alistair, yes i know he's whiny, but he's an important character in the main plotline. I mean i wanted to kill Morrigan, but nope it wouldn't let me. I'd welcome parts of the story where you have to do it on your own. E.g All your teams been captured or a stealth mission. or a meet up which only happens if you go on your own.Phoenix96 (talk) 19:44, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
While I feel like ever so slightly going into a fanboy rage at the suggestion of killing my king, I'd say the companion system is fine because the gameplay sort of demands it. 4 party members is fine for Dragon Age because each slot can fulfil a certain role, the most basic being 1 warrior, 1 rouge and 2 mages one healing and other damage dealing, or maybe you can spice it up a bit. Have 2 rouges, or maybe do what I did and have no warriors simply because Arcane Warrior is way to good. Mass Effect only has 3 for the same reason, Soldiers are warriors, Engineers are rouges and Adepts are mages. You only need 3 due to there being a healing system in place for all classes (Medi-gel and cover). Companions also need to be there to at least make use of the variety in classes and abilities. It would suck if you only got to see what dual wielding rouges could do in the game. --TheRageMage (talk) 21:06, June 7, 2012 (UTC)TheRageMage
In DA:O, during the time in the fade we have to go it alone for a while so we do encounter the play style. I like having the option to go alone but personally do prefer having a party. I feel like we should have our character and 4 party members. I believe it would make for more interesting combat. --TheReaperofInsanity (talk) 22:31, June 7, 2012 (UTC)
I like the party because I think it makes the game more realistic and interesting. The party makes DA more interesting because there are plenty of one-man-army games out there and more realistic because there is no way in hell I would go into a dungeon full of monsters alone. Also I like the dialogue with the companions.--CouslandRogue (talk) 03:32, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
- I also like the dialogue with the companions and I did point out that I said I sometimes hate some of the companions in the group and yes going into a dungeon is a good place to have companions. It would be funny if you could use a companion if things got to hot you could toss one of your team mates into the jaws of a dragon and bolt for the surface. I would love that for a game choice. 203.45.127.20 (talk) 03:53, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
Well, you can try to tell Shale to attack Alistair in Stone Prisoner DLC.--CouslandRogue (talk) 04:02, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
- That's my best momment in stone prisoner. Hell, any chance to bring pain to Alistair is one of my joys in Origins. 203.45.127.20 (talk) 04:20, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
I start to hate it when I have too many companions, since many of them often wind up never seeing beyond the borders of the party camp. I'd rather have fewer, more developed companions. DAWUSS (talk) 04:32, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
- I would like more developed companions to, sometimes it seems you just have a bunch of freeloaders who can't buy their owm equipment and most of the time you really don't need or even use them, they just mill around camp. 203.45.127.20 (talk) 04:40, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
To the OP, if you hate companions then DA is not the game for you. Go play a one-man-army RPG out there. I absolutely love all the companions of DAO and DAA. 112.205.21.46 (talk) 04:44, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
- I have many times! Need I have to point out that I do not hate the game, just some of the companions! 203.45.127.20 (talk) 04:49, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
I'd actually like to see the next Dragon Age game take a few ideas from a few other games in this regard. I love Skyrim, but the awesome elements of the Elder Scrolls won't work here. Rather I think Bioware should look at Dragon's Dogma. The combat is a bit faster and more fun (on consoles, I don't know anout on pc) but it isn't as stylized as Dynasty Warriors. Companions should be handled a bit more like Mass Effect, where you can't control them but can give out orders like where to go, what weapon to equip and what abilities to use. Also, I usually prefer companions, but I'd like it if we had the choice to take them or go it alone for many quests. Some quests we may have to go alone, or take one, two, three, or possibly all companions. It maight be difficult to implement more than three companions, but I think it would help the story flow a bit better in a few places, even if it isn't direct control (like The Final Straw). 71.208.45.198 (talk) 18:47, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
In DAO you have to go through the Fade alone and there is a fight at your camp that involves all your companions.--CouslandRogue (talk) 18:55, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
- Herein we see the problem. The Fade sequence was dreary and overlong, while the camp battle ended far too quickly to really enjoy. (What could have been a truly excellent battle fell flat considering your party actually outnumbers the Darkspawn for once.) Son Goharotto (talk) 19:22, June 8, 2012 (UTC)
