Hi, I spontaneously feel interested in reading a story that features a character that only wants to help, but said character has trouble reconciling their altruistic or empathetic nature with the limitations of reality. I also wouldn't mind reading a novel about someone who find their-self, tragically, at the epicenter of an accident or curse, (such as Alex from Silent Hill: Homecoming). Any suggestions? 12.146.29.230 (talk) 12:30, May 19, 2015 (UTC)

I don't know if these novels will ultimately fit the criteria you're seeking out, but it does fundamentally fit into that whole tragic hero trope. I've got an idea of some novels/pieces of literature you may indeed enjoy. They to traverse across a variety of genres. If you get the chance to read Blade: The Autobiography of a rescue helicopter-pilot, you must. Realistic fiction about a teen boy who has the dream of becoming a pilot who becomes an orphaned homeless street kid. He is taken in by a wealthy family whose baby he saves, only to experience several life and death situations, both in the air and on the ground. NOTE: It's not an actual autobiography, the title is misleading. I read it as a teen, years ago.

Also, Stephen King's: The Gunslinger. He considers it his magnum opus, and I feel as though you may like it based on the criteria you've presented. It's a novella, but i'd get the one which has a collection of 5 stories. Also, Secret of Dragonhome, though the narrative is tragic with a sense of altruism rather than the characters per se. Since you liked Silent Hill, I guess you're familiar with Carrie. Elechi Amadi's The Concubine is really good. It really combines that sense of empathy, jealousy, with a sense of how far is far.

I WOULD also recommend Oryx and Crake. I don't want to spoil anything about it, but I think you may like it, especially as 2 of the MC's fit the descriptions you describe in a sense. Not explicitly. The Young Elites also, but I wouldn't recommend it if you want something mature. The narrative focusses on this sense of blame and verisimilitude. The Fire Sermon too. If your going for tragic hero I'd suggest Oedipus by Sophocles, or Pericles by Shakespeare both are plays so it's better to see the preformed but it's an interesting read either way...John the Manic (talk) 01:20, June 15, 2015 (UTC)

I really wanted to recommend classical pieces like Oedipus or even Antigone. Oresteia too is a somewhat decent recommendation too. Seneca's Phaedra too is pretty phenomenal. But to be fair, classical tragedies, and Shakespearean works (to a lesser extent) provide a different sort of tragedy in comparison to what the OP was wanting. But they're certainly great pieces nevertheless.
