Alistair & Zevran-how to keep both?

This is my 2nd playthrough where I'm trying the balancing act of keeping Alistair and Zevron. I'm human noble, so I'm planning to marry Alistair and be queen. Lovely Lelianna seems to be my "argument trigger"...popping in to say "so...you and Zevron", when I'm trying to keep Zev casual and Alistair adore. Her conversation seems to trigger the "choose, him or me" from Alistair. (Funny enough, Morrigan just had the "so, you and Alistair" conversation right before Lelianna had the "you and Zev" conversation...I guess different NPC pay attention to OTHER different NPC or something.)
So far I've figured out when Zev asks if we're not lovers, are we at least friends, tell him yes and he stays happy. Next trip back to camp he'll come to the tent again, just like old times, and Alistair doesn't complain. (oddly, after that cute manuver, Lelianna give me the "so, you and Alistair"...I'd LOVE to know what triggers the "chat about our companions" conversations in the game.)
How do I stop the 2nd "choose" conversation from triggering? I've read in other posts that it's possible to marry Alistair and keep Zev as a consort. I'm on xbox...is it all about keeping the little "love meter" below the last (white) box on Zev? Keep him happy, but not high enough to offer up the diamond?

You don't need to be in love with Alistair to marry him. You can marry him for political reasons. -
