Ventus, formerly known as Qarinus, is a northeastern coastal city in the Tevinter Imperium. It was initially a kingdom founded in -1700 Ancient by the Qarinus, an offshoot of the Neromenian tribes.[1] The city has great strategic importance as it lies across the Ventosus Straits from the disputed island of Seheron. Qarinus was renamed "Ventus" following a Tevinter victory on the Ventosus Straits.[2]

History[]

Prior to the founding of the Imperium, Qarinus stood as a mighty kingdom of its own, settled by the Qarinus tribe. In -1195 Ancient, Darinius, High King of Neromenian and Tevinter, two of the remaining three pre-Imperium kingdoms, married High Queen Rathana of Qarinus to join her kingdom to his,[3] forming the Tevinter Imperium. He declared himself first Archon of this new empire. While Minrathous became the capital of the Imperium, Qarinus retained its importance.

The city architecture

A subterranean embassy for the dwarves was built following Tevinter's alliance with the dwarven empire.[4]

Qarinus was captured by the Qunari during their invasion in the Steel Age. It remained under their control until the Three Exalted Marches called by the Imperial and Andrastian Chantries between 7:25-85 Storm.[5]

Qarinus was later re-named Ventus to celebrate a Tevinter military victory, likely the victory of 9:12 Dragon, a battle which involved an entire fleet of Qunari ships attacking Qarinus and being eventually forced to turn back to defend Seheron when Tevinter legions, heavily reinforced by mages, tore down the positions they had gained on the mainland.[6]

Alistair and his companions, Varric Tethras and Isabela, confront him at a gala, which causes a skirmish to break out. Magister Maevaris Tilani, a relation by marriage to Varric, aids them in the fight.

During the battle, Isabela slays her former lover and comrade, Lord Devon, to hide their past collaboration in transporting slaves. After the brawl, Alistair and his companions leave the city by ship.

Three Trees to Midnight
Without the Ben-Hassrath to measure the doses of qamek, Bas-taar of the Antaam claims that they had no choice but to give massive doses to all the mages taken during the fall of Ventus, even those who didn't fight, and that "they will not come back to their minds." Other prisoners considered troublesome were also given qamek and put to work doing menial labor. Strife narrowly escapes this fate thanks to Myrion's interference.

This brutality, unprecedented even by Qunari standards, in combination with the Dragon's Breath Conspiracy that was attempted against all of the non-Qunari nations, may galvanize support for Tevinter's ongoing war with the Qunari, both within the Imperium and from the other nations, as the former demonstrates what would happen across Thedas if the Qunari were victorious, and the latter shows that the Qunari have no interest in honoring the peace between them and the other nations besides Tevinter that resulted from the Llomeryn Accords.

Trivia[]

  • Though in-game, Ventus has had a new name among Thedosians for decades, the real-world reason for the change was confusion between the words "Qarinus" and "Qunari."[2]
