“People fear the next age if it comes too soon.”

Kieran (born 9:31 Dragon) is the son of Morrigan. He is possibly carrying the soul of the slain Old God Urthemiel.

Kieran only exists if either Morrigan performs her ritual or had been in a romantic relationship with the Warden in Dragon Age: Origins.

Involvement[]

Dragon Age: Origins[]

This section contains spoilers for:
Dragon Age: Origins.

If the Warden performed the Dark Ritual with Morrigan:
Kieran was conceived on the eve of the Battle of Denerim as part of a ritual his mother had proposed. In fathering the child, the Warden ensured that the soul of the Archdemon would pass into Kieran, making the sacrifice of a Grey Warden's life unnecessary.
If Kieran's father is Loghain Mac Tir:
After being conscripted into the Grey Wardens, Loghain Mac Tir reluctantly underwent the dark ritual with Morrigan at the Warden's behest. Loghain conceived Kieran with Morrigan and thus ensured that no Warden would die when the Archdemon was slain.
If Kieran's father is Alistair:
Despite his shock at the prospect, Alistair eventually agreed to lay with Morrigan, ensuring that a Warden's death would not be needed to end the Blight.

Upon the death of the Archdemon atop Fort Drakon, its uncorrupted soul passed into Kieran.

If the Warden shared a night with Morrigan without performing the Ritual:
Kieran was conceived when the Warden slept with Morrigan and was born a normal baby without the soul of an Old God.

Dragon Age: Inquisition[]

This section contains spoilers for:
Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The Inquisitor encounters Kieran after Morrigan joins the Inquisition as its liaison. He will make a brief appearance in Skyhold, before being told to go back to his studies by his mother. Kieran has a number of comments on the Inquisitor depending on race and class, and on whether he has the soul of Urthemiel or is an ordinary child.

Kieran will either muse on how the Inquisitor is expected to be scary because people "fear the next age if it comes too soon", or find the Inquisitor nice for someone who kills a lot.
If the Inquisitor is a human mage:
Kieran will either confess that lyrium gives him "terrible nightmares" and state that lacking the gift of magic is like being blind, or say that his mother wouldn't want him to become a templar and that magic isn't so scary.
If the Inquisitor is an elf:
Kieran will either say that he doesn't know why the Inquisitor's people "want to look like that" and that their blood is "very old", or confess that he finds elves pretty and laugh at the Inquisitor's large ears.
If the Inquisitor is a dwarf:
Kieran will either say that the Inquisitor "can't be taller, not without the titans" or share his own desire to be taller.
If the Inquisitor is a Qunari:
Kieran will either declare that their blood "doesn't belong" to the Inquisitor's people and express his sorrow at what happened to the people or discuss the Inquisitor's height and scary horns.
If Kieran is asked about his mother:
Kieran will either call her "the inheritor, she who awaits the next age" or simply the Witch of the Wilds.
Urthemiel's Soul

Kieran and Flemeth during The Final Piece

If Kieran has an Old God soul, regardless of who drinks from the Well of Sorrows:
Flemeth will locate Kieran and call to him through Morrigan's Eluvian. Within, Flemeth reveals she is possessed as the tales about her have always said, however not by a demon, but by the elven goddess Mythal. Flemeth gives Morrigan the choice of having Kieran back and continuing to be hunted by Flemeth, or leaving Kieran behind and being free of Flemeth forever. Morrigan chooses her son, insisting that Flemeth will never have him. Before she departs, she looks at Kieran and holds his hands; a glow emanates from him and goes into her, indicating the passing of Urthemiel's soul from Kieren to Flemeth. Flemeth then reassures him that there will be no more dreams. He is unhurt, but comments afterwards that he feels lonely. Morrigan remarks after Kieran is out of earshot that Kieran had a destiny but that destiny is now in Flemeth's hands.
If Alistair or Loghain Mac Tir stayed with the Grey Wardens:
Alistair/Loghain can be seen in the Skyhold gardens talking to Morrigan about Kieran (contemplating if the child knows how he was conceived, if the child has the soul of an Old God, and if he knows that one of them is Kieran's father).
If the Warden is Kieran's father:
Alistair asks about the Warden's relationship with Kieran and if Morrigan and he have been in contact.
If Kieran doesn't have the soul of an Old God and the Warden romanced Morrigan:
If the Warden dies killing Urthemiel, Alistair will mention the Warden and how he thinks he would have approved of Kieran. Morrigan laments that she could have had both Kieran and the Warden.

Quotes[]

Dialogue[]

The conversation with him largely depends on whether he carries the soul of Urthemiel (1) or is an ordinary child (2):[1]

Inquisitor: Who is your mother?
Kieran (1): Mother is the inheritor, she who awaits the next age.
Kieran (2): She's the Witch of the Wilds.

Human rogue or warrior

Kieran: Mother said you were scary.
Inquisitor: Why would I be scary?
Kieran (1): Because people fear the next age if it comes too soon.
Kieran (2): I don't know. You seem nice for someone who kills a lot.
Inquisitor: Some people seem to think I'm the most frightening thing in the world.
Kieran (1): Mother says they would think the same about me, if they knew.
Kieran (2): Those people haven't met you, have they?

Human mage

Kieran: Mother never told me the Inquisitor was a mage.
Inquisitor: If you can sense magic, don't ever become a templar.
Kieran (1): I can't. The lyrium gives me _terrible_ nightmares.
Kieran (2): I don't think Mother would like that much.
Inquisitor: That's not such a terrible thing, is it?
Kieran (1): No. It would be worse if you couldn't touch magic at all. Like being blind.
Kieran (2): No. Magic isn't so scary like everyone thinks.

Elf

Kieran: Mother never told me the Inquisitor was an elf.
Inquisitor: That's not such a terrible thing, is it?
Kieran (1): No, I just don't know why your people want to look like that.
Kieran (2): No, I think elves are pretty.
Inquisitor: The ears gave me away, didn't they?
Kieran (1): No. Your blood is very old. I saw it right away.
Kieran (2): giggles Yes. They're very large.

Dwarf

Kieran: You're very short. Mother didn't say you were a dwarf.
Inquisitor: You caught me. And I was trying so hard to be taller.
Kieran (1): But you can't be taller. Not without the titans.
Kieran (2): I know how you feel.

Qunari

Kieran: You're very tall. Mother didn't say you were a Qunari.
Inquisitor: I'm told it's the first thing one notices about me.
Kieran (1): I noticed your blood. It doesn't belong to your people.
Kieran (2): Mother notices strange things about everyone.
Inquisitor: That's not such a terrible thing, is it?
Kieran (1): No. I just feel bad about what happened to your people.
Kieran (2): I guess not. You just have really scary horns.

Trivia[]

  • Before the name or gender of Morrigan's child was known, Kieran was popularly referred to by fans as "the OGB" — the Old God Baby. The games' developers have also used this nickname occasionally when referring to him in discussions.
  • Kieran's voice actor, Odin Black, is the son of Morrigan's voice actress, Claudia Black.[2]
  • Kieran is potentially the first half-dwarf ever encountered (if the Warden was a dwarf).
  • Kieran could have a claim to the Fereldan throne if his father isn't the Warden, though the strength of such a claim would be ambiguous as he is an illegitimate child who isn't publicly acknowledged as being Alistair's son or Queen Anora's half-brother.
    • Kieran also has a tenuous claim to the Fereldan throne if his father is the human noble Warden, provided the Warden married Anora.
    • However, it should be noted that Morrigan promises Alistair that she will not let Kieran take the throne when she offers him the ritual.
