Fearlings are lesser demons in service of a Fear demon. They take the form of the viewer's fear.
"When Lieutenant Herve cut one in half, he started screaming about an imagined fire, The Templar with us waded in, looking for Mages who were not there. The second my sword pierced a fearling's flesh, I became consumed by thoughts of disappointing my mother. I told everyone I saw a Dragon."
Inquisitor and Hawke perceive the Fearlings as oversized spiders. Cassandra sees them as maggots. Sera describes them as physically impossible embodiments of nothingness.
