Elsa is a tranquil mage of the Kirkwall Circle of Magi and the assistant to Knight-Commander Meredith. The knight commander prefers a tranquil assistant since she finds the tranquil to be both efficient and single minded with Elsa in particular being extremely organized.

During the main quest On The Loose, she will provide Hawke with biographies for the three Apostate mages that are suspected of being Maleficarum and have eluded the Templars, Emile de Launcet, Huon and Evelina.
