Deepstalkers are vicious predators of the dark that carve small tunnels through the stone in search of prey. Scaled like a lizard but with the head and frightful maw of a worm, the deep stalker walks and leaps on two legs and is able to curl up into a ball that will be indistinguishable from the stone around it. Rarely are there any signs of an impending deep stalker ambush, and even more rarely do unwary victims survive such an encounter. They attack with a mighty leap, their razor-sharp foot claws bared for the kill, or they spew acidic spittle that begins to digest their prey. The only chance most stalker victims get is when one of their companions falls; the stalkers are beasts, after all, and most will stop to devour a kill before moving on to the next fresh victim. However, it seems to be possible to domesticate them. Tame deepstalkers may be encountered in Jarvia's hideout.

Deepstalkers are found throughout the Deep Roads. They feed on anything they can get their fangs on, including the harmless nugs, the deadly spiders, and even the vile darkspawn that walk the world below.

Lore Edit

"A fool trusts his eyes. A wise man fears every rock is a deepstalker"

--Dwarven saying.

Possibly the strangest of all the creatures found in the Deep Roads is the deepstalker. Tezpadam, as the dwarves call them, hunt in packs, generally by burrowing underground and then striking when their prey is in their midst.

Stalkers come in several types. Spitters have venom glands and can spit secretions that slow or injure their prey. Jumpers hurl themselves at their targets, knocking them down and making the kill easier. The most common variety scares its prey, leaving the unfortunate victim helpless against the rest of the pack.
—From Codex entry: Deepstalker

One of the few natural, non-darkspawn creatures to live in the Deep Roads, the deepstalker is a reptilian cave-dweller known for burrowing into the stone paths of the Deep Roads and ambushing prey, usually nugs. They hunt in packs, attacking with round mouths full of serrated teeth or spitting poison from venom glands. Although a single deepstalker poses little threat to any experienced explorer, packs can be quite lethal.
