A Mage cult led by the Blood mage Frenic has captured a High dragon and is using it as part of a blood magic ceremony. Frenic has also taken a young Elven mage, Avexis from the White Spire Circle of Magi prisoner and forces her to ingest the blood of the dragon as part of the ceremony to awaken her "destiny". The Seekers of Truth however have learned about the cult and dispatched a force to eliminate them. A young Cassandra Pentaghast and her mentor in the Seekers, Byron lead the attack on the ceremony, killing several mages and the High dragon. Avexis is rescued but Frenic manages to escape.

Later at the Grand Cathedral, Cassandra and Byron together with Lord Seeker Aldren attend an audience with Divine Beatrix III to report on the attack. The various Grand Clerics are also in attendance, having come to Orlais for the Chantry's ten-year gathering celebration. The Seekers are praised by the Divine for their success and Cassandra is complimented by Grand Cleric Callista for killing the dragon; remarking that she "...would expect no less from a Pentaghast." Despite First Enchanter Edmonde's protests, Aldren refuses to return Avexis to the Circle, insisting the Seekers must learn why she was targeted by the blood mages. Knight-Commander Martel complains that the Seekers were reckless by attacking without the assistance of the Templar Order, given their limited numbers but is rebuked by Aldren.

That night at the Seeker's fortress, Cassandra encounters Byron kidnapping Avexis from her cell after incapacitating two fellow Seekers. Cassandra follows him demanding an explanation. Byron flees to the rendezvous place with Avexis and Cassandra in tow. Byron reveals to Cassandra that Avexis has the ability to control wild beasts and that this was the reason she was abducted. He also explains that he only discovered the location of the blood mage ceremony as part of a broader investigation into a conspiracy within the Chantry. Since it was the High Seeker who insisted on holding Avexis at the Seeker's fortress, he suspects Aldren may be involved as well. They are interrupted when they are attacked by Frenic and his followers. Byron is slain in the ensuing confrontation protecting Cassandra and Avexis is recaptured. Cassandra discovers Regalyan D'Marcall, a Circle mage hiding nearby but before she can interrogate him, a detachment of Seekers arrive and apprehend both of them for abducting Avexis. Regalyan explains to Cassandra that he was the contact Byron had come to meet and that he was to take Avexis to a safe location since the conspiracy meant the Chantry, Templars and the Seekers of Truth could not be trusted. Cassandra and Regalyan manage to escape the Seekers and flee, hoping to discover who orchestrated Avexis' recapture. Meanwhile Knight-Commander Martel convinces the Divine to assign him and the Templars the mission to capture Cassandra and Regalyan. High Seeker Aldren however dispatches the Seekers to locate the duo in secret.

Cassandra and Regalyan go to join the a group of Circle mages who were assisting in their investigation and are waiting at the safe house intended for Avexis. Upon arrival however they discover the mages have been massacred. Haydi, the only survivor explains that the blood mages ambushed them after they returned from Lazarro's before he succumbs to his wounds. Regalyan explains that Lazarro is an information trader who originally gave him the location of the blood mage cult and the pair decide to track down Lazarro to see if he offers any potential leads. Meanwhile at the White Spire, Edmonde dispatches Alte to lead a group of mages hoping to locate Regalyan before the Seekers or the Templars.

Cassandra and Regalyan reach Lazarro whom, under duress, reveals that Frenic and the blood mages plan to launch some kind of attack on the ten-year gathering and is colluding with some high ranking official in the Chantry hierarchy. Lazarro admits he was to inform the blood mages if Regalyan or Cassandra contacted him but that they had already placed a trap for them regardless. The group is attacked by several blood magic controlled Ogres and several Golems. Lazarro is killed and Cassandra is injured before she and Regalyan manage to escape. Martel and a party of Templars confront the duo and attempt to arrest them. Cassandra and Regalyan manage to evade the Templars temporarily giving Regalyan a chance to heal Cassandra's injuries. Cassandra confesses to Regalyan that her prejudice against Mages stems from the fact that her brother, Anthony Pentaghast, was slain by blood mages hoping to use the Pentaghast family's famed skills as Dragon hunters to capture a dragon to use for their blood magic.

Eventually Martel and the Templars locate Cassandra and Regalyan's vacant camp site in a cavern by the river. Martel dispatches the Templars to search the area while he contacts Frenic via an Elven stone warning him that Cassandra and Regalyan must be captured before the ten-year gathering. Martel is overheard and held at swordpoint by Regalyan and Cassandra who promises to reveal Martel's involvement with the blood mages. Martel manages to escape however and Regalyan collapses the cave before he can rally his Templars.

Cassandra and Regalyan elect to warn the High Seeker and use a secret passage to enter the Seeker's fortress undetected. The duo sneaks into the High Seeker's office and explain to Aldren everything they have learned about the conspiracy. Aldren agrees to take their case to the Divine however before he can leave the fortress he is slain by Knight-Commander Martel. Martel alerts the Seekers and Cassandra and Regalyan are imprisoned for Aldren's murder.

As the ten-year gathering begins, Martel presides over the public execution of Cassandra and Regalyan. Before they can be executed however Alte and the Circle attack the Templars allowing them to escape. Alte reveals that Martel has been conspiring with Grand Cleric Callista of Orlais to allow her to succeed as Divine. The Templars are defeated in the ensuing battle and Martel is slain by Cassandra.

Attack on the Ten Year Gathering

a quartet of dragons, under the command of Avexis, assault the Grand Cathedral

As Divine Beatrix III addresses the chantry faithful assembled in the Grand Cathedral courtyard, the assault begins. Using Avexis' abilities enhanced by his blood magic, Frenic unleashes four dragons on the gathering. The four then proceed to slaughter the assembled Grand Clerics one by one, with Callista looking on from safety, gleeful at the prospect of becoming Divine very soon.

Not long after that, Frenic orders Avexis to summon the High dragon to prepare to kill Beatrix III. While Cassandra leads a counter-attack on the dragons, Regalyan liberates Avexis, disrupting Frenic's control over the beasts. Callista is injured in the battle and flees to Frenic for aid. Instead Frenic kills her and uses her blood to fuel his transformation into a Pride demon. Frenic overpowers the Circle Mages but is fatally wounded when Avexis turns the High dragon against him as Cassandra delivers the killing blow.

At a public ceremony, the Divine acknowledges Regalyan's bravery and proclaims Cassandra the "Hero of Orlais" and the "Right-Hand of the Divine". Later as Cassandra prays before a statue of Andraste in the chapel, the Divine warns her that this incident was only a beginning and that they must prepare for the future as she entrusts Cassandra with a large tome emblazoned with the Seekers of Truth sigil.
