Dane's Refuge is a congregation point for refugees fleeing the darkspawn in Lothering. Standing in front of the chantry is a stone bridge. Over this bridge, there is a building on the right — this is the Refuge.

When the Warden walks into Dane's Refuge for the first time, a group of Loghain's men attempt to arrest the party.

During the ensuing fight, Leliana assists the Warden's party. The soldiers will surrender once their commander suffers enough damage. A second dialogue occurs, and the Warden may kill the commander or choose to send a message to Loghain. Either way, Leliana will offer to join the party at the end of the encounter. Her approval is not affected by any of the choices made during these two conversations.
